OCTLIGHT is commercializing an OCT Swept Source based on VCSEL technology, which provide superior performance in terms of size, spectral quality and wavelength tuning speed. A limitation of the VCSEL technology is that the output power from the VCSEL is around 1 mW while many applications require 15 mW or more. The output power can be amplified using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The Actphast project together with research institute VTT will aim at developing a cost-efficient solution with a free-space optical coupling of the VCSEL and SOA. Following the project completion the results will be transferred to OCTLIGHT packaging partners such that current packaging methods can be optimized for a superior performance at a competitive cost.
The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (2007-2013) under grant agreement no. 619205.
