Medical Applications

Which Medical OCT Applications Can the VCSEL Swept Source Platform Be Used for?

The 1060nm VCSEL Swept Source Caliper platform can be used for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging within Ophthalmology, where SS-OCT is an established clinical standard used in diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.

Cardiology was the next medical application where OCT has been translated into clinical use for intravascular imaging after percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). OCT holds great potential for a range of medical applications and is currently in the research or commercialization phase for skin cancer diagnostics (dermatology), cancer assessment in-vivo and ex-vivo from esophagus cancer to breast cancer (oncology), tumor margin detection for bladder cancer treatment (urology), dental health assessment (dentistry) and ear health. The 1060 nm wavelength is a good trade-off between penetration depth and contrast.
